CTAs and Hedge Funds Become the Unlikely Winners of the Energy Shock

While the oil price surge dominated headlines, a quieter but equally remarkable development was taking place within the hedge fund industry. Quantitative trend following funds, commonly known as Commodity Trading Advisors or CTAs, were generating some of the strongest returns in their history.

These are not conventional hedge funds. CTAs use sophisticated algorithms, machine learning and statistical models to identify and follow price trends across futures markets. Their strategies are largely data driven and designed to respond to market signals rather than emotion or sentiment.

The energy shock created an ideal environment for these strategies. By early February 2026, many CTAs had established long positions in energy markets as crude prices began to rise. When the conflict erupted on February 28, many of these funds were already positioned on the correct side of the market.

The results were significant: Societe Generale's SG CTA Index was up more than 12.2 percent year to date by June 2026, while the SG Trend Index had risen 12.3 percent over the same period. For comparison, the same indices recorded their strongest annual performance in 2022, rising by more than 20 percent during the Ukraine crisis.

Nicolas Gaussel, CEO and CIO of Paris based CTA Metori Capital Management, confirmed that approximately one third of his firm's 2026 performance came from energy trades. Yung Shin Kung, head and CIO of Mast Investments, observed that the contribution from long energy positioning was comparable in magnitude to the contribution seen during March 2022.

But the trade is changing. As US Iran peace negotiations introduced greater uncertainty, market momentum began to slow. Trend followers, by definition, follow established trends rather than attempt to predict future developments. As the direction of the market became less clear, these funds began reducing their exposure. Some had already significantly reduced their oil positions.
